The bee is a simple creature, but it has survived on Earth since before the dawn of human civilization. Human fascination with this natural community of workers has been expressed in art since prehistoric cave drawings. For my BFA thesis project at Arcadia University, I created a timeline of art works that depict this long and complex history. The art mediums and subjects reflect the diversity and multicultural impact that bees have had on humanity for as long as it has existed. The five pieces include the following: The Bee Beard Game, a digital illustration of the multicultural belief that bees represent human souls, one of the possible origins of "honeymoon" in quilling, Cerberus and Aeneas' honey cakes painting, and a printed booklet of information on each work and the symbolism and narrative behind them.
In addition to the installed art, I also created designs for stickers and made extra knitted bees for key chains, which were sold at the Thesis show's opening night pop-up shop.
All research, art, installation, and products were done by Katy Freeman over an 8 month period of time.
