The Flowers

The Flowers is a self-initiated design project that grew from my love of basketball. It’s a project dipped in nostalgia but also looking to the future of women’s basketball.

It began in 2023 as a series of digital illustrations I made of players during the NCAA Women’s March Madness basketball tournament. Over time I developed The Flowers into a larger project that incorporates hand-printing, digital printing, apparel design, and street marketing.

With the illustrations I chose to remove the players' bodies and focus entirely on uniforms, tapping into the nostalgia and recognition that jerseys hold for fans. This approach let the visual storytelling speak through color, typography, and uniform details rather than traditional portraiture.

As the portrait series expanded, I added a logo that features custom lettering. The logo design is adaptable to multiple color palettes and has space to include floral elements.

When I decided to attend the 2004 WNBA All-Star game in Phoenix, I further expanded the project to celebrate the location and the occasion.

I extended the logo to include the Arizona state flower and used a color palette that echoes the team colors of the city’s WNBA and NBA teams. I also designed a patch with strong visual ties to Arizona’s natural landscape and that incorporates my original sport-inspired typeface, Momentum. Both designs were applied to apparel and headwear.

Finally, I printed mini posters of my illustrations to hand out to other WNBA fans at events throughout the weekend.
