Hox Zodiac is a collaborative project between artist , Victoria Vesna, and neuroscientist, Siddharth Ramakrishnan, that is based on the Chinese zodiac, Ayurveda and scientific research on the Hox gene, which regulates embryonic development across all species.
The research has evolved into a participatory performance, in which the ritual of the dinner table is the starting point to share ideas about our multi-dimensional relationship to animals.
I designed a bi-lingual, hand-bound art book to accompany the 10th anniversary exhibition in Los Angeles, which included a cumulative review of the scientific and cultural research to date, as well as a 'cookbook' specific to each animal of the Chinese zodiac.
The book was designed to be delicate, oversized and one of a kind to encourage slow reading. Handmade paper and Japanese stab stitching.
